Zero-Waste Fashion Through Whole Garment Technology

Zero-Waste Fashion Through Whole Garment Technology

As the world seems to be becoming more aware of their environmental impact on the world the talk on sustainable fashion is increasing, blogs on how to build a sustainable wardrobe, brands becoming more transparent on their sourcing and processes, fast fashion being put to question, zero-waste fashion is having the spotlight thrown onto it and that is just the beginning. Since the beginning, Kapeka has always prioritised natural, sustainable fibres locally made here in New Zealand to reduce our own carbon emission. From sourcing the fibre to packaging a finished garment we valued the entire production line to be conscious and as minimally impacting on the Earth as possible.

Included in these efforts is Kapeka's use of Whole Garment Technology. Often, knitwear is crafted by knitting each part of a garment (back, front, sleeves) separately and then sewing them together. In contrast, Whole Garment Technology uses an innovative knitting machine (Shima Seiki) that crafts a garment in 3 dimensions, all in one without wastage from off cuts or seam allowance. It can be described as a 3D printer - for textiles.

The results of Whole Garment Technology?

Seamless garments that mould the body comfortably and create a smooth and clean silhouette - increased durability through having no seams (usual weak points in knitwear) - and importantly, zero waste. No off cuts, no wastage. As we source quality fibres, the cost-per-kilo is considerably higher high compared to coarser, cheaper fibres and so we cannot afford to have wastage from off cuts and cutting away the seams.
Shima Seiki also mentioned that as the garment is made all in one part, if the time comes to the end of a garment (you've outgrown it, it was a sample or otherwise), the thread can be unravelled and reused, recycled.

Below we list a few of our most popular garments made using Whole Garment Technology. Note - not all styles can be made using WGT, certain shapes and style (like a style with a hood) need to be stitched in. Knitted to shape - not cut and sew.
